« Zajal », an Arabic chamber opera by Zad Moultaka

Based on the ancient poetic and musical tradition of debating (known as Zajal in the Lebanon), which is still alive in the Middle East, composer Zad Moultaka weaves the fabric of a production in which language and identity are intertwined in a strange and dramatic game.

This work, featuring a female singer, an actor, three percussionnists and an electroacoustic broadcasting and image-projection arrangement, together with seven brass instruments from the Ars Nova ensemble, directed by Philippe Nahon, challenges the norm and turns things on their head.
